No. 35 - The Column

This fountain pen is handcrafted from Kamagong Ebony (Diospyros blancoi), a dense and expressive wood known for its deep brown to near-black tones and subtle golden-brown figuring. In this piece, the material is used not only for colour and grain, but also to support a more unusual formal language: a long cylindrical body, a darker lower section and a pronounced central transition that gives the pen an almost architectural character.

The silhouette is intentionally atypical. Rather than following a fully conventional rounded profile, the design introduces a stronger geometric moment at the centre, creating a visual pause between the cap and the writing section. This gives the piece a sculptural quality without making it decorative for its own sake. The darker Kamagong elements feel grounded and quiet, while the warmer brown grain in the upper body brings depth and natural variation to the composition.

The pen is fitted with a gold-plated Bock No. 6 nib, adding a refined technical contrast to the dense wood and satin metal section. The nib gives the writing instrument a confident, classic writing presence, while the handmade body keeps the object unmistakably individual. Together, the materials and form create a piece that feels experimental but controlled: a possible step toward a recognisable LIGNORAE signature, where function, material and silhouette meet in a deliberately unconventional way.
