The First One Hundred

No. 49 - Torsion

A study in movement, tension, and sculptural freedom. Hand-carved from deep black ebony, LIGNORAE TORSION transforms the traditional fountain pen into an expressive composition of twisting planes, flowing depressions, and asymmetric volumes. Its satin-black surface absorbs light while revealing the subtle traces of the sculptor's hand, creating a powerful contrast with the precision of its silver-coloured metal fittings and golden nib. Inspired by the language of contemporary minimalist sculpture, TORSION challenges conventional geometry, inviting the eye to follow its movement and the hand to discover its form.

Object notes

Material, surface and intention.

Movement captured in stillness. TORSION begins with a simple sculptural question: how much movement can exist within an object that remains perfectly still? Carved from ebony (Diospyros spp.), this LIGNORAE creation explores the tension between geometric discipline and artistic freedom. Its elongated silhouette appears to twist around an invisible central axis, with alternating concave surfaces, angular transitions, and flowing ridges creating the impression of continuous rotation. Every change in perspective reveals another relationship between light, shadow, and volume. The result is a sculpture whose movement exists entirely in the perception of the observer.

The unmistakable presence of the human hand. Unlike the mathematical regularity of machine-produced objects, TORSION embraces the subtle irregularities of traditional sculptural craftsmanship. Each depression, ridge, and transition has been individually shaped by hand, allowing the creative process to remain visible in the finished piece. The satin-black surface preserves delicate traces of the carving instruments, revealing an authenticity that mechanical perfection cannot reproduce. These marks are not flaws to be concealed, but evidence of an intimate dialogue between the artisan and the material. In this philosophy, perfection is not measured by symmetry, but by the expressive integrity of the form.

Where sculptural expression encounters mechanical precision. Beneath its unconventional exterior, TORSION remains a fully functional writing instrument, incorporating the reliability of German engineering into its artistic identity. A gold-coloured Bock No. 6 nib provides the writing experience, supported by a Schmidt K5 ink converter. The polished silver-coloured metal section introduces a deliberate interruption in the otherwise uninterrupted black composition, establishing a visual boundary between the organic irregularity of the carved ebony and the exactness of its mechanical components. This contrast is essential to the design: two different approaches to craftsmanship, united within a single object.

A sculpture that belongs to the hand. Entirely handcrafted in the LIGNORAE atelier in Munich, Germany, TORSION represents an exploration of the relationship between artistic creation and human interaction. Its asymmetric surfaces encourage a more intimate experience than conventional cylindrical writing instruments, inviting the fingers to discover the contours left by the sculptor. Over time, the repeated contact of the owner's hand may subtly alter the character of the satin finish, allowing the object to acquire a personal history. Presented in the signature LIGNORAE wooden Cocoon, TORSION exists at the intersection of contemporary sculpture, traditional craftsmanship, and the enduring art of handwriting. It is not simply a fountain pen shaped like a sculpture. It is a sculpture that has learned to write.
