Material, surface and intention.
No. 39 takes the natural depth of Indian rosewood and gives it a slightly more ceremonial character. The wood carries rich brown tones with subtle variations in grain, creating a surface that changes gently with the light while remaining visually calm and composed. Its restrained satin finish keeps the material tactile and natural, avoiding an artificial gloss and allowing the character of the rosewood to remain clearly present.
The body and cap are individually turned and shaped by hand, then progressively refined through careful sanding and polishing. The geometry is deliberately clean, with balanced proportions and precise transitions between the wooden elements and the metal components. Nothing is added simply for decoration; the design relies instead on the relationship between material, proportion, and surface.
At the front, a gold-plated Bock No. 6 nib introduces a warmer visual accent. Against the deep tones of the rosewood and the cooler metal section, the gold becomes a controlled point of contrast — enough to give the pen a more distinguished presence without overwhelming the simplicity of its form. The combination gives No. 39 a character that feels slightly more formal than its sibling pieces while remaining unmistakably understated.
The filling system is built around a Schmidt K5 converter, providing a reliable and familiar mechanism beneath the handcrafted exterior. By combining established writing components with an individually made wooden body, the pen balances technical reliability with the singularity of an object shaped and finished by hand.
As with every natural-wood LIGNORAE piece, the grain, tonal variations, and small irregularities belong exclusively to this particular pen. No two examples of Indian rosewood will ever repeat themselves exactly, making the material itself an integral part of the identity of the piece.
No. 39 is therefore less about ornament than about presence: warm wood, precise proportions, a measured touch of gold, and a writing instrument designed to remain elegant long after novelty has faded.
